Whenever you visit Costa Rica, one of the most fun things you can do is go on a snorkeling tour. All kinds of tours are very popular here in this beautiful Central American country, but if you’re anything like me, you love being at the beach, in the ocean, or on the sea. I’ve been a swimmer for as long as I can remember, and even swam competitively in high school. But that’s not what this post is about. Today I want to tell you about an amazing snorkeling tour I recently went on with Sea Bird Sailing Excursions, and how it was seriously one of the best experiences of my life! If you are interested in taking a snorkel or sailing tour in Costa Rica, I highly recommend using their services!
My boyfriend and I moved to Costa Rica in October 2017. We MOVED here, we are not tourists. We don’t make a lot of money and don’t spend our day to day life as “vacationers.” Because of this, we haven’t been able to do many “touristy” things. We’ve been more focused on learning how to become locals. We’ve been busy figuring out how to pay for bills, learn Spanish, finding where to buy the cheapest food, finding a gardener, etc.
So when a friend recommended a snorkeling tour with Sea Bird Sailing Excursions, I was really excited to do something FUN for a change. We signed on right away and took the tour just a couple of days later. I was so excited to take the morning off and enjoy myself. And I couldn’t wait to get back in the water and swim around! When the day came, I was already in such a great mood, and I was about to be delighted even more.
The experience was FANTASTIC. The crew made a great impression on me, they were very friendly and knowledgeable. Most importantly, they were VERY attentive to everyone on the boat and kept us all comfortable with drinks and snacks. Every time I was just about done with a drink, they’d ask me if I wanted another. There drink selection included sodas, juices, wine, beer, rum, and even chile guaro. Chile guar is a tomato juice shot-like drink that was created right here in Coco! And their snacks included things like cookies, crackers, chips and salsa, and fresh fruit. Everything was included and offered to us generously. The all-inclusive experience felt like a luxury. It was a luxury I was not really used to, as I haven’t had many all-inclusive experiences.
It was the perfect day as we set off. It was warm, but not too hot. The wind on the sailboat was refreshing as we made our way to the snorkeling spot. We saw two sea turtles on the way (but I didn’t have my camera out unfortunately). We also passed a place they called “Monkey Head Rock” because the land mass looks like a gorilla’s head popping out of the sea. It was cool, unique, and fun. Even though I’m usually trying to be a “local,” it was something I would have never seen had I not gone on this tour.
Once we got to the snorkeling spot, I was ready to jump in! The water was REALLY warm (as it always is here in Coco) and it felt so nice getting in. Time passed very quickly while snorkeling. I saw tons of sea urchins, and different kinds of fish, big and small. Some were so small you could barely see them as large pools swam past, others were even bigger than my head! We had a great spot where we could explore all over. There were many different crevices and things to see, it was like there was a new fish species in every new crevice. Before I knew it, we were being waved to head back in.
Th Other people on the tour with us even turned out to be wonderful people. They were in the content creation business as well, and had some great advice to give us. We talked about our lives and things we loved about Costa Rica (they were living in the San Jose area, which is much more inland into the country). At the end we exchanged information to get in touch in the future. It was great enjoying their company on the way to and from the snorkeling spot.
Next thing I knew, it was over. 4 hours had FLOWN by, just like that. It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had, and I highly recommend booking a tour with Sea Bird Sailing Excursions any time you’re visiting Costa Rica. They also provide sunset cruises, half day or full day tours, and private charters, so whatever your group needs, they can take care of you! Check them out at www.seabirdsailingexcursions.com.
